Mario Batali: "Listen To What The Earth And Scientists And Farmers Are Telling Us" About Our Food

Mario Batali in The Wall Street Journal : What lies ahead in the future of food? I don’t think we’ll be eating high-tech food pills anytime soon, thankfully. But with problems like collapsing fisheries and rising levels of childhood obesity, we do need to step back and consider where we want to be a few decades from now. The future of food in America hinges on our ability to listen to what the earth and scientists and farmers are telling us. The issues surrounding food are not all black and white, good or bad. We must embrace moderation, from big business to the small producer, from steak to tofu. My own concerns are hardly unique to me–and I neglect countless important points–so think of what follows as the start of a conversation. Read the whole story Get HuffPost Food On Twitter ! BP Claims Process Is A Risky Gamble For Gulf Residents

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — Fishermen and business owners stung by a summer of lost revenue from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill have until Wednesday to file their compensation claims for short-term damages, and then they have to ask themselves: Do I feel lucky? Many will eventually be offered a final settlement from BP PLC’s compensation fund – but accepting that check is a gamble. To cash it, they’ll have to sign away their right to ever sue the oil giant and let a court decide how much they’re owed. And if the long-term damages end up amounting to more than the settlement, they’ll be out of luck for additional payments to cover those future losses. They also could wait and risk getting an even lower settlement offer later if the shrimp, oyster, crab and fish industries rebound faster than expected, and tourists return in droves. The fund’s czar, attorney Kenneth Feinberg, said he will be offering “generous” settlement checks with the goal of keeping people out of court, but they don’t have to accept the offer now. The Gulf Coast Claims Facility, set up to dole out the money, will be around until August of 2013. However, Feinberg warns, they could end up with a much smaller check later. “If they decide a year from now, I’ll take the final payment, they’re going to have to show prospective damage,” Feinberg said in a recent interview. “But my offer may not be available to them a year from now if everything is back to normal.” If victims want more time to think about it, they can opt for interim payments by submitting a new claim for damages every three months over the next three years. That would still leave them with the option to sue BP. But they’ll have to continue to prove their losses, and their final settlement offer may shrink with each passing day. Mississippi seafood processor Keath Ladner said the structure of the program is forcing people “to gamble on our livelihoods.” The compensation fund has so far paid out nearly $2 billion, and Feinberg said about 80 percent of business claims have been paid in full. However, many business owners with larger claims, over $100,000 and up to several million, say they are getting shortchanged or that their requests simply haven’t been paid at all. Even the Justice Department has told Feinberg to speed up the claims process and be more transparent about how the cases are being evaluated. Ladner, who employs about 70 boats and is one of the largest processors in the state, hasn’t opened his shop since the April 20 oil rig explosion that spewed more than 170 million gallons of oil into the sea and killed 11 workers. He hasn’t had the product or the work force to make the business profitable, and he said no national buyers want his seafood because of the lingering misperception that it’s tainted by oil. His claim for roughly $1.7 million has been under review for weeks. Many who are struggling through the claims process feel that Feinberg is shortchanging them or keeping their claims under review to force them into accepting the final settlement offer because they’ll be so far behind on bills, they’ll have no choice. “If he keeps everybody hungry, they’re going to have to take any kind of settlement,” Ladner said. “We’ll have to take whatever he offers.” Feinberg denied that and said the fund is doing the best it can given the more than 400,000 claims filed so far. About 122,000 of those have been paid or approved for payment. Feinberg said the larger business claims are taking longer because they’re more complicated. Nearly 147,000 claims are clogging up the process because they have little or no documentation to support losses, Feinberg said, noting dozens are under review for potential fraud. He said the fund will begin denying those claims after Wednesday’s deadline. About 60,000 claims have already been denied payment, and nearly 72,000 remain under review. Wwe Survivor Series Results

Wwe Survivor Series Results , WWE SURVIVOR SERIES, Cena Fired, Orton Retains title, Nexus Defeated, Cobra Lost ,Sheamus Lost, Dolph Ziggler Wins, Natalya Wins , Beth Phoenix Backed to wwe, Team Alberto Del Rio defeated By Big Show and Boyaka, Miz has not came,Kane Still holding title. Main Points of the WWE SURVIVOR SERIES 2010 1. The series continues! Bryan Daniel has another really good opening match on the card. WWE should be grateful to have him in this slot, who works in a similar role in WCW cruiserweights. Have a good opening match and put athletics. 2. Miz incredible cutting promos on the card are good. Miz with a big match on the card would be better, I’m glad to see Miz have time to see her, but felt his character would be better constructed from Bell to Bell, and not through vouchers PPV. 3. I am very surprised to see Sheamus put on John Morrison. It really shows how Sheamus came last year. It has grown from a recruit who seems to further a legitimate main eventer with the possibility of raising a star event not so great. 4. I hope that the outcome of the WWE Championship match tonight does not change the existing character of the R-Truth. Apart from singing at the crime ring and low heel almost like the character he plays. A complete tour could be fun. 5. Kaval did not show the bad card, but I do not think it bodes well for him that the crowd was not in his match. Kaval hope will bounce from here and possibly have a program with Dolph Ziggler. 6. I am disappointed that MVP was the first man eliminated tonight. He made some very good work lately and appears again on the verge of another escape. 7. The elimination match was fun but nothing special. I did not like how they eliminated Alberto Del Rio, but I do not know how they would have done. 8. Natalya victory seemed like the greatest moment of struggle by women this year. This was not a great time overall, but it was best we can hope for in the division of Diva 9. The Edge and Kane non-finish was terrible. I do not want to see Kane in another PPV main event. Next month, the TLC we should have a fun game for Edge, but I think it can be driven by Paul Bearer stupidity. 10. it’s amazing how, over Santino is Cobra. 11. So, John Cena is now drawn. I appreciate the time he was given at the end of the main event to let the message sink, but I also think that not enough of a big deal was made about Randy Orton successfully defend championship. This should be the biggest story coming out of this show. 12. Will we see John Cena on RAW tomorrow night? I think it was a bit of a disappointment that we did not get the big “You’re fired” moment tonight at the map. Why the WWE decides to reward the viewers instead of people paying for the show? 13. How to move forward with the WWE this angle? Will we see John Cena coming through a mask, as Mr. America? GM to allow the mystery superstar on its top mark to be fired by another superstar? Does that make sense? That people tonight, all for me. It was not a good PPV. There were solid games, but overall it was not worth the money. It seemed he would be the most memorable show since Wrestlemania, but it proved to be a fair of the WWE. No related posts. Allegedly Real White iPhone 4s Appear on Sale in China

Apple’s line up of devices has been known to be notoriously popular but some really stand out above the rest. The iPhone , in particular, is one of the most readily hyped smart phones on the market with its market share steadily growing each and everyday. However, the iPhone has seen its fair share of problems over its lifespan as you’re sure to know including the infamous antennagate fiasco. Another dilemma that has plagued the iPhone 4 is the fact that the white iPhone 4 is missing despite the device being on the market for quite some time. Luckily, there are options for those looking to grab a white iPhone 4 including services that will replace the front and rear glass but it’s not exactly the most legit way of acquiring a white iPhone 4. However, it seems white iPhone 4s have begun appearing in China priced between $800 and $1,200 which are allegedly legit. As you’re sure to know, the white iPhone 4 is assembled in China along with most of Apple’s other products. While we cannot confirm that these are actually legit, it wouldn’t be too surprising considering the circumstances. Whatever the case may be, it begs the question if Apple will ever actually put the white iPhone 4 up for sale. Is anyone out there still waiting for it? via slashgear Popularity: 1% [ ? ] Tags: Apple , iOS , iphone 4 , Smartphone , white This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you’re reading it on someone else’s site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php Five Filters featured article: Beyond Hiroshima – The Non-Reporting of Falluja’s Cancer Catastrophe .
